Just what skills do our students need to master in order to be effective and efficient learners? Are the skills that students need to master today significantly different than the skills that students needed to master in the past?

  1. Students today need to learn higher level thinking skills. Critical thinking like summarizing, analyzing, etc. will be helpful. The ability to work in groups, communicate in person and in writing, and self-reflect are other areas where students will need to master in order to succeed in education and in the work-place.

  2. Our students need to learn how to collaborate and work with others. They need to be presented with a problem and figure out how to make it work. In the past learning was based on content being learned, and many drills and memorization, Now the focus needs to be on how to find the information and apply it to real life situations and how to be good problem solvers. They need to learn how to perform at jobs that aren't even here now.
