How did this lesson incorporate the "engaging strategies": Create, Collaborate, Think Creatively, Communicate, Write to Communicate, Read to Learn, Question?
This lesson did a great job of incorporating engaging strategies. The strategy of create was evident in the questions we used (created by the other class, but still created!) as well as the way we chose to present the report. We incorporated collaboration throughout the process, beginning with charting background knowledge, moving to deciding who researches what question, to discussion of questions, and how to do the final presentation. We used creativity during the discussion of questions, relating the volcano to our own lives with the memories we had of the volcano, and how to creatively present the report. Communication was used during the entire process. We used writing to communicate as we jotted down notes for the background knowledge and answered the 6 questions. Read to learn was applied as we read the printed and online articles. Finally, questioning was used as we questioned our answers to see if they made complete sense in the way we were sharing them in our final report. We also questioned each other on our understanding of the tougher questions: how and why. I felt engaged during the entire process and could not believe that class was already done!
This class used all the 21st Century skills. It was also a student driven lesson and we were actively engaged throughout the class while collaborating, communicating, and creating our presentations. Engaging students is a key to learning in my opinion. I also liked the strategy of having students read to gain a base of knowledge. These are strategies which I can use in my classes.
