Class 1 - Volcanoes

How did this lesson incorporate the "engaging strategies":  Create, Collaborate, Think Creatively, Communicate, Write to Communicate, Read To Learn, and Question?

This class allowed us, as teachers, to experience a lesson from the students perspectives. It hit on all of the engaging strategies. Some of the strategies I felt I would like to remember and will work to use in my own class were read to learn, write to communicate, and think creatively. We read to learn while gaining background knowledge on our assigned volcano. The writing to communicate and the think creatively were experienced in the presentation activity. We had to take our answers and formultate them into information statements while making a creative presentation that would engage our classmates as well as teach them something. It was an interesting experience. I appreciate that the “engagning strategies” were brought to our attention as I should have them posted in my room!

    Class 1 Blog-
This first class really gave me some great ideas to use in my own future lessons. The engaging strategies using differentiation at three levels, partnered with reading strategies and technology were a great way to promote collaboration, creativity, and communication throughout the lesson. The use of the reading strategies really promoted the learning targets in the content area subject. As my group read,we discussed terms, looked up those needed, and answered the who, what, where, when, and why questions. By the time we finished I felt we had a good understanding of the basics of volcanos so that further learning of the content would be manageable.

  3. It was a fabulous lesson pulling together all the essential elements for differenciated instruction. As we participated in the lesson, I had a hard time concentrating on the volcano lesson because in my mind I was thinking about the different topics I teach and how I could possibly integrate ideas into lessons I already do with my classes. Thanks for modeling a great lesson.

  4. This lesson truly used all of the engaging strategies, and I look forward to trying them in my classroom as well. From the moment we walked into class, we were actively engaged in the learning process. The entire class from the very start required us to work collaboratively with our peers, and I loved that aspect of it. We truly had to read to learn about our volcano in order to gain insight about it. Not only did we have to read, but we also had to think creatively and critically in order to develop true questions to drive our research. I had no clue about the volcano given to me before we started. After reading our text example, along with our internet examples, we had to write to communicate our learning to the class through a presentation. We collaboratively learned the information from working together as a class. It was a great lesson with strategies that we can incorporate into our classes.

  5. I really enjoyed the lesson because of the different activities involved and the use of technology. It gave each group their own freedom to choose how they wanted to find their information and present their subject. It also allowed the freedom of responsibilities.

  6. I am really excited about bringing some of these strategies into my classroom. I felt that the creativity, creative thinking and collaboration was seen with the project. I liked that with these strategies the students could choose their presentation style and think out of the box. Communication and questioning took place through the entire unit. These strategies engaged all of the students whether they were directly involved or just listening. The questioning and research allowed students to think beyond what they were doing. The write to communicate was evident with the use of the smart board and the dry erase boards. Finally the read to learn took place with the articles and was effective because they met the students reading needs. These are definately strategies that I can see myself using! Differentiation was also greatly seen throughout these strategies!

  7. I enjoyed being active throughout the lesson, never a dull moment! This kept me very interested and I could see utilizing some of these strategies in my classroom. The use of technology for the questions of who, what, where... is a tool I will use. It was a good use of front loading the material as well as differentiation.

  8. This lesson really helped us to see the perspective of a student. As teachers, we want students to be actively engaged throughout a lesson. By making us the students, we were able to see what we could do to make our lessons more engaging. For example, when we were required to create questions to research, we not only got to research facts but also things that interested us about the particular volcano. No one was telling us to look specifically for one answer, the information we discovered was deemed essential and beneficial to all. During the lesson, we were given full access to several resources in order to discover our information. If I did not find what I was looking for in the article, I was able to seek out another source. Instead of having to research multiple volcanoes, the students became the teachers, sharing the information they had found by creating a presentation of choice. The entire lesson was catered to how I wanted to learn it, not how the teacher wanted me to.

  9. We created a new project, other than a paper, to share our information. We worked together to try to create our final project. We thought creatively in order to try to come up with an attractive product. If it would have worked as we intended, we would have been able to communicate the information. We read the research in order to learn the materials needed to do the project. When things did not work well, we questioned what we needed to do differently. Candi O'B

  10. The team was really working together gathering the information and trying to find a way to display it creativly. There was some writing involved but more focus was on reading to find information.

  11. This lesson really showed how kids can ALL be actively engaged during a learning activity. We (the students) were communicating with one another about what we had to research, what we learned, and how we wanted to publish. Collaboration was strong, and the best part was having the opportunity to be creative with our end product. My favorite idea was starting with the who-what-where-when-why questions and having to complete the question - great ownership!

  12. This lesson incorporated many different strategies. It was very educationally appropriate, allowing the class (us) to research, collaborate, and create. I appreciated the way that the lesson was structured, giving us direction, yet allowing us the opportunity to choose how to produce our final project.

I found that the way the materials were differentiated was very interesting. Not only was it done by reading level, which is how we traditionally make this happen, but by concept/topic.

  13. Ths lesson definitely demonstrated engagement at its fullest. We were busy every minute with a definite task. Using technology allowed us many oportunities to express ourselves creatively and demonstrate our knowledge. I can see how students would be very interested in this type of activity.

  14. I was surprised at how much was accomplished in a short period of time. We worked well together to get the info we needed. Everybody had something to contribute because we all had a different way of looking at things. All of this is the same with students--give them the parameters and time constraints and watch what they can accomplish. Collaboration and creativity really stood out as we worked to put our presentation together.

This was a great way to learn about volcanoes. At the elementary level more time would need to be devoted to how to research, how and what to put into the presentation and how to work together. Without careful guidance it can become more about the how to's than about the content of volcanoes. It would be good practice for us to write out a current lesson into this format to better see what it would look like at the elementary level.

  16. This lesson really did pull all of the strategies together into a lesson. It was a fun way to get the information and present it to the group. It made research fun. We also learned a lot from each other. It helps having a variety of learners in our group. Everyone seemed to be able to add something to the research. I need to think about how I can use this with Career Cruising as well as other lessons that I am hoping to do this school year.

  17. One of the things that I have learned is how technology can be used to enhance a lesson. I enjoyed collaborating with the other teachers in our group. We had a great discussion on what information to include in our powerpoint. I feel that the volcano project incorporated all of the learning strategies.

  18. We worked together to gather information, formulate questions, and create a presentation of what we learned about volcanos. Everyone was actively involved. We were all responsible to read and provide information on our topic. Through collaboration and communication were able present what we learned.
